Gratitude keeps you energized, and positive energy brings you positive results. Whatever it is you desire, it’s due to the happiness you think it will bring you – preferably all three levels of happiness! – so dwell on those happy feelings. Then you’ll stay grounded in positive energy…and get those positive results.

Important: Avoid the “Opposite” of Gratitude

(Dwelling Upon What You Don’t Have)

Beware the trap of “doing the opposite” of feeling gratitude: To focus on what you don’t have or don’t want gets in the way of achieving your goal; it only reinforces lack of having. Instead, feel grateful for having achieved what you want as you move forward, and it will come.

I worked with a student who had gained twelve unwanted pounds her first year of college. Kathryn told me that she had been trying to lose this weight for more than a year, but she couldn’t achieve her desire. I suggested she create a Weight- Loss Vision Journal. In it she put photos of outfits she would wear once she lost the weight, quotes that inspired her, and statements of gratitude for having already achieved her goal. Once she got started, she had a ball creating her journal. The pictures and quotes she gathered really inspired her. Focusing on these positive reminders of her assured success – rather than dwelling on her frustration over her recent weight-gain – motivated her and propelled her along the path toward her desired outcome. This time Kathryn lost the weight!

When you focus on being unhappy with the present, you waste powerful energy on what is wrong rather than expressing gratitude for the positive outcome that you’re going to achieve. In Kathryn’s case she was dwelling too much on her dissatisfaction over having gained the excess weight. Her journal inspired her to feel grateful for having lost the weight, even before she actually lost it. And that made all the difference!

To feel grateful for something even before you’ve achieved it is an act of faith. But you’ll find that act of faith easier to muster once you’ve applied the principle of gratitude and seen it work a few times! As you do, you’ll also experience how obstacles along the way can actually be blessings in disguise. So – yes – that means feeling grateful even for those obstacles. Trust that it will all contribute to your success in some way, even if you’re not sure how at this moment.

As you get used to viewing your experiences in college through the lens of gratitude, you set yourself up to get what you want. Gratitude opens you up to attract positive energy to come your way. And that, ultimately, is how you’ll achieve your goal! You can encourage that process.
